WordPress banner size issues and how to fix them.

There are usually 3 issues we face when dealing with a banner size on a WordPress website. These WordPress banner size issues happen when we want to:

  1. Adjust or make a custom header banner.
  2. Adjust or add a custom footer banner in the theme itself.
  3. Add banners to our entire WordPress site.

Fortunately, there are two ways we can take care of WordPress Banner size issues and these also are:

  • Changing the banner size within your WordPress Theme itself.
  • Changing the WordPress banner size with the use of a Plugin.

How to change the WordPress banner size within your WordPress Theme.

If you are looking at changing the banner size in your WordPress website header or footer, then you will need to do this within the theme itself.

Since each WordPress theme is individually coded by the theme’s developer, you will probably need to add some custom CSS code to your theme’s header or footer in order to adjust it banner size.

In order to change the banner size properly in your WordPress theme you should contact your specific theme’s support and ask for their recommendations as well as where to put the CSS custom short code in your theme.

Your theme’s developer and/or their support should be able to instruct you on how to properly add a some custom CSS short code to your theme so you can adjust the header banner size properly.

However, if you are looking to add additional banners to your WordPress website for various reasons like advertising or special offers etc. and you want to make sure that they are sized and positioned correctly, I would suggest you check out some the WordPress banner plugins below.

Changing the WordPress banner size with the use of a Plugin.

There are various WordPress website banner plugins that you can use to change the banner size within your WordPress website without messing around with your WordPress theme itself.

Most of these plugins allow you to change the banner size as well as have other banner adjusting functions you may find useful.

What is the average banner size for a WordPress Website?

While the most popular header banner size for a WordPress site is:1024 x 768px, there is no one “average banner size” for a WordPress website. Especially when it comes to themes.

Every website’s theme is designed differently depending on other dimensions within a theme’s layout, like columns, as well as other widgets.

Therefore, banner sizes for WordPress websites vary greatly depending on the theme. Some themes are very visual and want to highlight more imagery, so you may find larger or wider headers.

Whereas other themes are more contextual and want to focus more on text as well as images dispersed throughout texts. In other themes have a variety of widgets that they want their users to focus on.

Your theme will also have, as a result, it’s own specific header sized design by the developer of your WordPress website theme.

There is no one average size unfortunately. That is why you need to choose your best judgment when not only deciding on a WordPress theme but also what you want to accomplish with that theme.

What is the purpose of your website? Once you decide on the goals that you want to accomplish with your website then details like banner sizes will become much clearer.

Deciding the most appropriate banner size is for your WordPress website you need to decide what you want those banners to say as well as how you want them positioned in your website.

Do you want banners in the columns, throughout the text, at the footer etc.? How big do you want them? Do you want to emphasize more imagery over text or vice versa?

These are questions that you will need to answer for yourself.

If you are looking at integrating other banners within your current theme, like for announcements as well as display advertising and affiliate marketing, then you will have to work within your own themes layout and dimensions.

Thankfully, you can do this by either adjusting the other dimensions in your WordPress themes layout, using banner plugins or a combination of both.

This all sounds more complicated than it really has to be in most cases.

How to adjust your WordPress website banner size in the theme itself.

Most WordPress themes do allow some customization. You simply go into your WordPress dashboard and on the left column go down to Appearance then Customize.

This will allow you to customize your theme.

However, you should know that most free themes allow for very little customization.

So you may need to either upgrade your free theme to the paid version which will allow you the maximum amount of customization within your WordPress dashboard or simply buy a paid theme. This theme is GeneratePress

I had originally uploaded the free theme. However, I liked the theme so much and I had heard so many great reviews on it, that I had decided to upgrade to the paid theme. A great decision on my part and I’ve been with them for over 3 years now.

GeneratePress is well worth the money since you can use this theme on unlimited websites. It not only allows for customization, but it also has several different widgets and features that you can use to customize your website’s appearance and functionality.

In my opinion and I’m not alone, it’s one of the best themes out there and great value for money.

In any event, as you can see here, GeneratePress allows you to adjust the size in your header, navigation bars, even your page layout with your columns as well as padding.

By clicking the arrows you can narrow down the area of customization. But that’s just the beginning. As you click on each section of your theme as shown in the left column, you can customize even further.

The above customization should allow you to get your headers and footer banners within your theme to the size you want.

However, you may have some difficulty, if you want to upload a unique logo or image for a banner and use that as your header or footer within anything.

If it’s the case and you’re having trouble fitting your custom banner within your header footer on your theme, then it’s best to contact the support of that theme.

Many times in their documentation they can clearly explain how to use a custom banner within your footer or header.

However, most great themes have excellent support as well as forums should you need further instruction.

This is another reason why I would recommend GeneratePress as well.

Simply ask clearly in the forum or support section what you want to do and they will more than likely give you a CSS short code and tell you where to put it within your theme.

GeneratePress has a section within its customization dashboard where you can put in various CSS short codes  right into your theme.

If you are not familiar with CSS short codes and how to install them correctly, refer to the theme’s documentation and/or forums or simply contact support.

GeneratePress has the ability to add CSS shortcodes within the theme itself so you don’t have to go into any PHP files to do things like adjust the banner size in your WordPress website.

If you want to fit in a banner or two into your WordPress website and want to adjust the size, you will more than likely need to use a plugin.

WordPress website banner size issues, conclusions.

As you can see working with a banner, adjusting its size and position within your WordPress website isn’t as complicated in most situations as you think. Above I’ve given you two ways in which to do just that.

First, is within the theme itself. If you need to customize the header or footer size and while incorporating a banner.

Usually paid themes will allow you to customize the header banner or footer banner size.

If you are adding additional banners in your WordPress website you can adjust their size or sizes so that they can fit within it, in the most optimal way for performance.

I have listed above various plugins that you can use to accomplish this as well.

That’s the beauty of WordPress, the ability to customize the look and appearance as well as the functionality of any website.

You can accomplish this either within the theme or by simply adding plugins.

You don’t need to be a coder or a software developer either in order to accomplish this, which is why WordPress is the most popular website CMS on the internet today.
