Before switching to an All In One WP Migration alternative, you should consider some of these questions below.
What is All In One WP Migration and why would I want an alternative?
All In One WP Migration exports your WordPress website including your database, content, posts, pages, media files, plugins as well as themes. It’s simple to use since you can just upload your site to a different server with a drag and drop right into WordPress.
All In One is also mobile device compatible. One of the main benefits of using All In One WP Migration is it bypasses all upload size restrictions, this can be a blessing or curse as I will go into more below.
Many service providers set a maximum upload file size of about 4 Gigabytes. With All In One WP migration they make sure that each chunk of your upload is under two megabytes so you can easily upload your entire site to your new host.
All In One WP migration is also the most popular migration plugin in WordPress. All In One WP Migration also has over 5,746 five-star reviews. It has over 3 million active installations and is regularly updated as well.
So why would anyone look for an All In One WP Migration alternative? Well, no plugin is perfect, including All In One WP Migration.
Many plugins don’t play nice with other plugins as well as certain themes. This is one reason why you would look for an All In One WP Migration alternative, but not the only one.
In addition, sometimes service issues between a website hosting server and your computer may cause migration problems with importing from your computer to your server. However, a bigger issue seems to be the lack of a .zip file.
All-in-one WP migration tool uses the .wpress extension.
They used to use the .zip file, but changed because of, according to one report, WordPress hosting plan’s limitations and how many resources those .zip uploads took up during the migration process.
However, some Mac users have trouble using the Traktor app on their computers. Traktor is the app that you need in order to work with .wpress files.
Also, the free version of the All In One WP Migration plugin has an import limit of 521 Megabytes. Which is nothing for big sites.
In order to work with sites that are bigger than 521 megabytes, you would need to get the premium version of the plugin.
So before working with All In One WP Migration or any alternative migration or backup plugin, you need to check to see what the file size limits are as well as the extensions it uses.
For example, the All In One WP Migration plugin does not use .zip files which is one of the most popular compression files still used today.
All In One uses the .wpress extension, which in all fairness is designed to handle much larger packages of data without taxing a server’s resources.
Before throwing up your hands and switching to an All In One Migration alternative, check out these troubleshooting tips I found in their WordPress support section
How do I increase All In One Migration limit?
The only way to increase the All In One migration limit is to purchase the Premium or Pro version of the plugin.
How do I reduce file size?
The best way to reduce the file sizes is to go through your files and eliminate any old or unused data that’s taking up space.
Then of course, if your website is still taking up a lot of space, you may need to separate your site’s data into workable sections, compress them into chunks and upload them that way to your new host’s servers. Although All In One WP Migration did add the .wpress extension for just that very purpose.
The .wpress extension is able to handle moving large files. Larger than what a .zip file would normally be able to handle.
However, you do need the Traktor app in order to work with .wpress files.
Please note that the Traktor app doesn’t seem to work well with Macs unless you buy a developer’s license to be able to download the Traktor app yourself. Of course, All In One WP Migration does have a workaround for this.
Again you can always buy the premium version of the All In One WP Migration tool and you will have access to all their tools which will help you migrate any site of any size, even with a Mac.
How do I backup my WordPress site for free?
You can use any of the All In One WP Migration alternatives that I’ve listed above to backup your WordPress site for free. This is, except of course, for BackupBuddy, which is only available in a paid version.
However, you must be aware of each All In One WP Migration alternatives plugin’s limitations. Especially in the amount of data and file sizes they will allow you to use in their free versions of the plugin.
Does All In One WP Migration offer multisite migration?
All In One WP Migration does offer multisite migration. However, you are more than likely going to have to upgrade to their Pro version.
What is All In One WP Migration Pro and why upgrade?
All In One WP Migration Pro is designed especially for larger sites or if you are migrating multisites.
Although some have had their issues with All In One WP Migration, these issues have been mostly due to the users trying to use the free version of the plugin to migrate not only larger sites, but more than one site as well.
Though I must admit, the 521 megabyte limit does seem to be a bit too small for most WordPress sites.
Many think that the plugin should not be free at all, rather than offered for free for such a minuscule amount of data in their file size allowance.
But that’s another argument. The All In One WP Migration Pro hasn’t gotten over 3 million active downloads as well as over 5,700 positive 5 star reviews for not being a high-quality WordPress migration tool for nothing.
However, you should be aware of All In One WP Migration’s limitations in its free version of the plugin.
Finally, you may need to work with your web hosting provider’s support whenever you’re migrating your WordPress website from one host to another, since each host has their own particular set of resource limits and protocols depending on your plan.
Though, if you have an excellent host with great support, using the All In One WP Migration tool should help you migrate any sized WordPress website or websites you need. But if you need a great alternative give UpdraftPlus Migrator a shot!
